Dr Bashir Zikria

Dr Bashir Zikria arrives to Aspetar from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the USA, where he has been an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery for the last 13 years, and served as the Director of Sports Medicine Education and the Articular Cartilage Restoration Program. Dr Zikria has internationally recognised research and education in over 60 publications, several textbooks and book chapters, and serves as an editor and reviewer for several prominent orthopaedic journals. including Lead Editor for Johns Hopkins High Yield Review Book. He has taught orthopaedics and surgical techniques around the world, winning numerous teaching awards both nationally and internationally in the process.

Dr Zikria’s areas of clinical expertise include knee ligament reconstruction, elbow arthroscopy, shoulder arthroscopy, and articular cartilage injuries. He is actively involved in Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation and is one of the experts in the field. He has also published several papers collaborating with musculoskeletal radiology in articular cartilage and the MACI procedure.

Dr Zikria served as a team physician for the Johns Hopkins Department of Athletics and the Head Physician for the Afghan national sports teams. Previously, he was a team physician for the professional football Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Orioles, and several major colleges.

He is a member of several professional organisations, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He was awarded a Leadership Fellow by the AAOS and has been involved in several action committees.

Dr Zikria did all his training in the United States, from his undergraduate and medical studies in Pennsylvania to orthopaedic training under the world renowned Chitranjan Ranawat, his mentor in New York City.
